In 1805, explorers Lewis & Co. were stuck in Lemhi Valley, not sure how to get out. They ultimately decided to head north, up the North Fork Salmon River, and over the pass. Their journals weren't clear on which trail they took, exactly, hence the present-day name "Lost Trail Pass". Your humble servant, the Google Maps explorer on a bike, took the same road. Thankfully, there is now a very nice paved road over Lost Trail Pass.

Back in Montana, the road descends and enters another valley: the Bitterroot River. Here, towns get a bit more dense, and the road becomes more trafficked, but as soon as it does, a paved bike path begins to follow the highway - 50 miles of trail in all! And thus I arrived in Missoula, MT to take the last rest day of my journey.
